Power steering pump leak

Per the title it's leaking on my '92 with 4.3L/automatic transmission. A mechanic quoted me $400.00 to put on a new one. I said no thanks. I am going to pour some power steering fluid in with some stop leak and see if that helps. The leak looks like it is coming from the pump and not the hoses. I'm sure the hoses do need to be replaced. Can a shade tree accomplish this task without screwing too much up? I know the pulley on the old pump will have to be removed and I guess pressed on to the new one. This is the part that has me the most hung up on starting the job. Thanks for any help, advice and direction you all can give me.

Don't use stopleak, it will just cause more problems. If the pump itself is leaking, you can pick up a new one for about 40 bux and install it yourself...It's not a difficult job...

Tools required...
15mm socket
3" extension
power steering pully puller/installer (free from loan a-tool program at advance, autozone, or pepboys)
16mm box wrench (to remove the lines from the steering box)
bottle of power steering fluid

DO NOT USE SAE TOOLS OR YOU WILL FARK THINGS UP!

Re: Power steering pump leak

Thanks for the reply. I will check with my local auto parts store about the pulley puller/installer.

Re: Power steering pump leak

Not that I'm totally endorsing them but I ran Lucas Industrial Grade Power Steering stop leak in my YJ (it uses the same steering box and same style pump as the jimmy's) and not only did it stop the leak but I had no bad after effects of any kind. Can't hurt to try. I don't trust some of the other "EZ fix 1000" style rememdies. Anything with a Z or EZ in it or a 1000 or 8000 pro plus max in the name is usually crap lol.

Re: Power steering pump leak

The line fitting on the box is an 18mm.You need to get an 18mm flare nut wrench. That is the most commons size fitting for power steering lines going to the steering boxThe size of the bolts holding the pump on are 13mm and not 15 mm.The can on the pump is rusted out, common problem for older vehicles.
