Quieting engine noise

Just wondering what everyone thinks about the advice in this article on stopping engine noise. Is this good stuff to do? Are Lucas Oil products worthwhile?

Thanks!

G'day, welcome to AF

It's a pretty good basic article, but, it's pretty clear that it aims to push the use of additives, and this should always raise alarm bells, as anyone wanting to sell something is always going to recommend it use, whether you actually need it or not.

The only time I've seen oil additives have any positive effect on a car, has been on older engines, with lots of wear that were originally built with bigger tolerances.
Think anything English or American from the 60s and 70s.

On more modern cars I have seen additives cause problems.
Anything made in the last 10 years will be made to much smaller tolerances. As a general rule, this means they need to run thinner oil. If there is no significant wear, then adding a stabilizer, or additive can thicken the oil and cause problems with pressure and flow to critical areas in the engine, which will cause premature wear.

In some cases I have even seen it stop oil pressure dependent functions like VTEC on a Honda from working.
