2001 escort tdc location 2.0 dohc engine

My haynes manual describes notches on my crankshaft pulley to help locate tdc on this engine, but there are no notches no my pulley...any suggestions?

I'm not sure about your engine but I think on the 1.9 you have to remove the accesory drive pulley to see them.

Agreed. On the 1.9L there should be a notch in the rim of the inner flange of the crankshaft pulley (aka vibration damper), but its not for TDC: Its for checking ignition timing, which is some number of degrees before TDC. The corresponding mark is a small pip molded into the surface of the timing belt cover. This mark is used when doing diagnostics on the operation of the PCM and the EDIS ignitor, not for making adjustments.
The actual tdc indicators (on a 1.9L anyway) are on the side of the crankshaft timing sprocket (which carries the toothed timing belt) - which is only visible once the crankshaft pulley is removed. I have seen postings on other forums where someone has stated the number of 'teeth' between the crankshaft position sensor and the location of the 'missing' tooth, when the engine was at tdc; but I dont recall the number.
Another way to find tdc would be to take out either the #1 spark plug or the #4 spark plug, and hold a wooden dowel rod in the cylinder until you feel the rising piston pushing on it as you rotate the engine. The #1 and #4 pistons move together; the #4 spark plug is easier to remove on a 1.9L.
Are you doing this to check if the timing belt has skipped a tooth or two?
