Alternatives for heat shielding

I know you can use cigarette foil, but for larger pieces what do you guys use?

Bare metal foil. If you're adding heat shield why cheap out now, get the right stuff and get the results you want.

I was thinking of something that was textured, like cigarette paper. I have BMF, just thought it looked a little plain, no?

I used matt aluminum BMF for my last heat shield, but the parts shielded had molded in texture. I think household foil wadded up and then smoothed out would be just about right. Look at products like 'dynamat' to get an idea of the look of the real deal.
If you have to have texture though there is a hobby product out there, somewhere on the 'Strada sports' site i'd guess.

Some of the chocolate bars here (Germany) are wrapped in a foil that has a similar texture like the poison stick foils.

If you use BMF, you can roll a textured surface (like the handle of a hobby knife where the surface is similar to a meat tenderizer except smaller) over the bmf and it looks *just like* heat shielding. I've used it quite a bit to good effect.

If you have an AC Moore craft store in your area they sell a foil in the cake decorating section that looks exactly like the textured foil in cigarette packs. Its a roll big enough for a life time of mode lbuilding for less than $10.

One roll will last you your lifetime. And its textured just like MFH or others. Only downside is you have to glue it. Ill take a pic when i get a chance.

Just noticed today that Walmart sells it in the cake decorating section, which is near crafts. I just use a cheap spray adhesive sprayed on the back of the foil to glue it down. If a corner comes up just use some white PVA type glue under it.

Hey all. Hope this helps somebody. (My first post!)

I found this today at Michael's craft store. I think it was $9 for the roll.


Here are a couple comparison shots with MFH heat shielding and some cigarette foil a friend gave me.


You can see in this photo that up close, the lines on the MFH shielding look a little crisper, but to the naked eye they're almost impossible to tell apart. The MFH foil also has the advantages of being perfectly flat (no wrinkles or creases) and adhesive backing... but I think I paid about the same for that single sheet as I paid for the entire roll of cake foil.


Now if I can just get to that Enzo on my shelf, I can finally try using some!

For a bit larger scale. . . cream cheese wrappers also work well. . . washed of course. . .

Great first post! Very nice how you compared the most popular choices of foil.

This Wilton cake foil also comes in gold (more of a brass color, really) and white.
