Front whirling sound plus...

My '98 ZJ w/204K recently developed this sound which is consistent with tire rotation, the faster I go the faster the 'whirling' sound. The sound almost sounds dry but I've had no leaks. I replaced both front wheel bearings as this was my first thought, but this did not eliminate the sound I'm hearing. Even more recently, I've noticed a clicking/snapping sound up front when breaking in city traffic. I don't have time to do the work myself but I'd like to have an idea before bringing it to the shop. I would hate to have a shop tell me it's my front diff or transfer case only to still have these sounds hundreds later. Is there any way to pin point the source? Anyone have an idea what it could be?

Thanks

Re: Front whirling sound plus...

First thought: brakes. I had clicking/grinding while braking, and found that the brake pad had separated from the backing at 103k. Replaced, no further issues. Brake pads were original.

Re: Front whirling sound plus...

When I had the wheel bearings changed the mechanic incorrectly reinstalled the front drivers side dust shield. this caused the brake pad to push the edge of the shield against the rotor while breaking. I ended up replacing both front rotors & pads, this was two months ago. I plan to drop it off tomorrow & will have them check the pads for possible separation. The snapping sound when breaking is intermittent. Would a tranny show signs of rough shifting etc. if there were shavings in it, or not necessarily?
