2007 4wd 2500HD Ext Cab

Just thought I would post this for others with the same problem.

One rear speaker went out on me awhile back and recently the other rear speaker died so I decided to start looking.

Found the wiring rubbed thru and corroded at floor level just below where the handle/latch is for popping the hood. To access it properly I had to remove the plastic trim piece that runs at floor level for the length of the cab and I also had to remove the plastic trim plate that surrounds the handle for opening the hood. Found two wires "open" one was blue and the other one was brown and both were part of a twisted pair. Repaired them and all is working now.

Thanks for posting this! I'm sure it will help someone who is stuck wondering why the rear has no sound.

THE WIRES in this area come with electrical tape wraping and or laid in a plastic trough...

your saying the wires did not have any sheathing protecting them ..this is very important finding as this , if fabricated throughout the vehicle could be a saftey / expense costs issue.

They did have a wrap of tape around them but that had worn thru. Where the insulation on the wires had worn thru it turned the copper green and corroded. When I found the bad spot the wear in the wire was about the size of a pin head but the wire inside had corroded away. I had to cut back about an inch either side of the wear spot to find clean wire.

your vehicle is 4yrs old and this is very odd that this occured...wearing thru the tape and wire insulation...

copper and steel touching with some road deicing chemicals will rapidly destroy the metal..

make sure the wire harness is not in a position that you can step on it...or it can move.

I agree it is odd after only four years, that being said the truck does have 210,000 km on it.

I did place the wires back to their original position and vaccumed all the dirt away from around them, hopefully it lasts awhile!

since you have the newer body style I am not sure on why this dirt can get to the wires laid in the channel running to the rear..

my 2000 silverado ext cab has 135,ooomi which is about 210,oookm and this has never occured to me that dirt soils road grit got to the wires..

perhaps you need better floor mats with deep voids to capture all this debris your foot wear tracks into the vehicle....

hard to find quality floor mats lately..my matts are 11 yrs old....

I bought the truck about a year ago and it was used as a work truck so maybe that is why the mud and dirt got into places it shouldn't be?
The truck has no carpet just the factory vinyl floor. I use deep floor mats as well, so hopefully that should do it.

I see this is new to you ..

could be a flood vehicle...carfax can find info about your vehicle...

this issue is not normal..

Actually I did have a dealership run a history for me and the truck was purchased at an dealership close to where I bought it, and by the looks of a few warranty issues it stayed in the area until I purchased it, that being said I knew the truck was used by a guy who contracted to the oil and gas industry. A lot of the well sites are extremely muddy and I am pretty sure this is where all the excess dirt and mud came from. I got the truck for a great price but knew that it most likely had a hard life before I got it. It did have a very good history of regular maintenance though.

I guess that explains all the dirt inside the vehicle...if the windows where left open during rain storms that would add to this getting into areas not normally fouled by foot debris...gas/oil extraction areas are very muddy..

Good point about the windows, I never thought about that but it makes sense!
