What does Perform Service mean?

I have a 2001 Chrysler Town and Country Limited, and just got it a few months ago. It had just over 177,000 miles on it then. The service sticker from the dealership showed it due for another oil change at 180,000 miles. A couple of weeks ago, the overhead deck (that shows the temperature, direction, etc) starting showing "Perform Service" every time I turn on the engine, and stays on for about 5 minutes.
Figuring it was because it was due for an oil change, I just had that done earlier today. Lo and behold, it still says "Perform Service". The Meineke mechanic said the only thing he could see wrong with the van is the serpentine belt is worn and a little bit cracked (it has been squealing since 2 weeks after I bought the van), but he said I could go for a little bit before needing to have it changed.
I looked in the owner's manual, and there is nothing in there about the "Perform Service" message. None of the dashboard lights is coming on, just that message on the overhead deck. What could cause this message to show up? I would think if it were just because of the belt, it would have been showing since the first time it started squealing. Is anyone familiar with this? Thanks!
