2000 2.2 auto torque convtr won't go in

Putting the motor back in and found the motor won't g all the way together (gap between trans bellhousing and block. Pulled motor back and found the torque converter not seated all the way. It's getting stopped by something inside and not the 2 tits the notches on the converter slot to. I can see and feel something that appears to have shifted over into the way from about the 12:30 to 5:30 position. How do I get this back out of the way? I can't get a scribe or screw driver between the shaft and mystery piece to pry it back. I'm using the same trans and torque converter that came out. I pulled the seal back out to get a better look at it. Never pulled trans from the truck. I tried to take pictures but not very successful. There may be a here picture if I'm lucky. You can see the bottom tit and the interference going from the bottom up around to the right almost to the top tit.

Re: 2000 2.2 auto torque convtr won't go in

After looking at the pump assy on another tranny, (My friend has several apart). I think something is up with the vane type pump that has let it shift to one side. Not sure so I'm pulling the unit and we'll rebuild it at his shop. Better safe than sorry. I need to say that I got this truck fairly cheap only knowing that it didn't run. After tracking down the person that drove it last, she said it was smoking really bad and the only work she had done was she had the head replaced in the past year or so for overheating real bad. No mention of tranny trouble but I'll check back with her. Anyway, I've gone this far so I might just as well O/H the trans and have a Re-manufactured motor and O/H'd trans. The truck itself is an Xtreme in very good condition. (167K)

Does not look good in there.
Is that the converter or front pump?

The converter stub has two notches that has to engage the pump gear tabs.

If converter is not installed all of the way back into transmission engauging pump gear tabs when you bolt transmission to engine without and space between converter pads and flywheel it will break off pump gear tabs.

From picture it looks like front pump bushing is wiped out.

Look in there and see if the pump gear tabs are broke off.

Let us know what you find.

Re: 2000 2.2 auto torque convtr won't go in

Well we got the Trans apart yesterday. Took a look at the pump and it looks fine. The rings that hold the vanes apart are OK. I got to thinking, when I replaced the front seal just before dropping the motor back in, (remember I was replacing the engine and planning on leaving the trans for another day or later if possible) I was using a wooden block to tap the new seal into place and the tapping of the case must have caused the vane assembly to walk. There is some resistance to moving when it's together but I found when I removed the seal to see what was going on (after getting the trans out from under the truck) I could move the vane assy back over to center. This may be confusing without some pictures so I took a few. The first one shows the pump with vane assy from the back side (pump split open) off center. The next is the vane assembly off to one side viewed from the front, I think I'll have to reply to post again to get the front side view with the vane assembly centered. to be continued...

OK, Here is a view of the vane assembly centered as it should be. With the vane assembly off center like it was, the torque converter woldn't slip in. If I had known what it was, I could have pushed it back to center with a small screw driver like I did after removing the trans to see what I was doing. I don't regret it though, it needed rebuilt with 167K on her. Here is the picture with the vane assembly straight as it should be.

Can not tell from picture but check the front bushing or get it replaced.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Re: 2000 2.2 auto torque convtr won't go in

The bushing is good. The only thing holding the vane assembly centered is the torque converter itself when it's in. Without it, the pump is free to turn in the concentric circle. (If that's the correct term. That's how it got off center. (Me tapping the new seal into the pump housing.
