Re: 1997 pontiac gp drive axle boot replacement

your car doesn't have a transfir case.

At the very least you'll have to remove the axel from the spindly. To do so, unbolt the axel nut, remove ball joint nut and pop it out the lower control arm, then you may have enough room to install a new outer joint boot without remove the axel from the trans. Just make sure to crimp the new boot tight enough so it doesn't come apart again.

Mine came apart too. Second time in 3 years. I guess I should consider myself lucky all things considered

Wait, brain fart. To replace the outer boot, you'll have to disassemble the shaft. Sorry. Not sure what I was thinking last night.

Have you thought about just replacing the shaft? New ones around here rung about 60.00 at the parts stores.

Re: 1997 pontiac gp drive axle boot replacement

To remove it, just follow the instructions in my post, #2, with the addition of using a pry bar to pry it out of the transaxel. Just be careful to not harm the shaft seal. There is a collapsable snap ring in there that takes some force, but it will come. Install the new one in reverse order and torque the nut to the proper spec. If I remember right, right around 130ft/lbs.
