Issue with drive axle boot?

I have a ’99 Grand Prix SE with the 3.8. I was replacing the sway bar end links and found an excessive amount of grease on the drivers side Front ABS Sensor.

My question is the sensor is right by the front outer drive axle boot. I turned the hub to search for cracks in the boot that could be causing the grease to get on the ABS sensor. Do the boots go bad and should I be worried about a larger problem? I did not find any noticeable cracks in the boot. I have not had any other issues with how the car drives.

Re: Issue with drive axle boot?

Axle boots can go bad and throwing grease is usually the only way you will find the problem. You can have the boot replaced or the entire axle shaft. Once this problem starts you need to get it taken care of because it will eventually cause the joint to fail due to lack of grease.

If you are unsure if it is truly leaking, clean the area very well and drive the car. If it is leaking you will find more grease in the same area.

Re: Issue with drive axle boot?

Thank you for the reply. To replace the boot will I have to disconnect the shaft from the rotor? Does anyone have details on how to do this job? Should I apply more grease?

I removed a large chunk of grease but I will clean more this weekend and keep an eye on it. What are the signs of the shaft failing?

Re: Issue with drive axle boot?

The boot kit will cost you about $20-$25, and a complete reman axle assembly will run you $75 or so. If you do the work yourself, it's up to you which to replace. If you take it to a shop, it will cost more labor to have the boot replaced (they have to remove the axle, disassemble, clean, install boot, regrease, reassemble, reinstall) which will drive the cost higher than replacing the entire shaft. Add that to the fact that dirt, grit, etc... may have gotten in the joint and damaged it, I would go with a reman axle assembly.

Re: Issue with drive axle boot?

I think I would replace the whole part and not just the boot.
First I will clean and watch to see if more grease is building up this week.

Does anyone have any instructions on how to replace the whole drive shaft unit?
