Calytic Converter inlet pipe

My 2003 New Beetle's inlet pipe to the catalytic converter has rotted a bit and separated from the converter. Is that pipe replaceable, or do I need to replace the whole converter? I've been looking for parts online, and it seems to be sold as part of the converter. There doesn't seem to be a bolt-able flange on the converter, just a plain ring-type flange. The pipe itself is actually flex pipe, with the wire mesh cover.

I really don't want to replace the whole converter, since the cheapest one I've found is $365. I'm thinking I may have to fabricate a new pipe.
