Fuel efficient 4 dr sedan?

Hi everyone. I am looking for a work car, that will also fit three kids occasionally. I'd like something fuel efficient, American made, and I don't care about how it looks style wise. I was hoping to get some opinions on what you guys would be looking at.

I have done my due dilligence/search. I have seen the posts by Ray Paulsen and visited his site. There are some good tips about buying a used car on the site. Think I will print them out and take with me before I check anything out.

Also have viewed posts with similar questions by electricjw, justinc7, escortlx, etc.... None seem to target the info I'm looking for, so I felt it would be ok to post a new thread. I know some sites discourage the starting of new threads so I wanted to pay my dues and search.

Any input is greatly appreciated, thanks.

I had an 08 Saturn Aura 3.5 that I was using for business travel. It was a decent car, got good gas mileage, and had 229 HP on tap.

I think the Chevy Impala gets 26-28 Highway. Rather easy to find one no matter what your price range and American made.

I am sorry, I forgot to mention the budget. I am looking for something about 4000 or under. Guess I got all caught up in trying to post my search efforts.

Also, I guess I will include that I hope to help finance this undertaking by selling/trading my 78 chevy stepside. I bought this in 1995, drove it for a couple years, got tired of putting gas in it, and bought a work car. So for the last 13-14 yrs it has pretty much sat in the garage.

Guess I'm pretty much doing the same thing now. I have a 2001 ford f-150 v8. Figure I'll keep it for hauling.

You could probably find a used Dodge Intrepid well within your price range. What about an older Ford Taurus or Chevy Impala? You may even be able to get your hands on an out-of-service Police Ford Crown Vic/Interceptor, but the gas mileage probably wouldn't be what you would want.

No diva I didn't see any complaints here. Just being cautious. As for the taurus, I thought I read in a couple posts to beware of them because they have been used as fleet cars frequently?

Yes, I will agree that the Taurus will often turn up having been used as a fleet car, but nothing that a quick auto history report wouldn't turn up. I personally prefer buying from private individuals because you stand a better chance of knowing the history of the car a little better.

Look no further than the Ford Taurus SHO.
365 horsepower twin turbo hybrid V6, gets around 30 MPG. Fuly specced, it's just 45k. Base SHO is just 38k

Auto history: Is there any others beside carfax? They are still for a fee right?

There is one besides carfax. With my last car, I used AutoCheck which is through Experian (yes the credit agency). It was cheaper than carfax and it also happened to have more auto history details (just yearly registries, but details are details). I've heard that the DMV will provide free history reports, but the thought of spending a day at the DMV has always made me gladly shell out the cash for an online report. Of course, for any vehicle history, you will want the Make/Model/Year as well as the VIN to make sure it is a match.

Unfortunately, statistically this thread is best kept where it currently is because this receives more views than any car-specific forum. It's a matter of people choosing not to reply. Sometimes people don't reply because they feel the matter has already been handled, and other times they don't have an answer.

And that fill-up sure is an ouch! My Civic had cost me $40 to fill up a few times and I thought that hurt. Luckily gas prices are back down now where I live, so that makes me happy!

This is important at the moment because of the current high level of fuel prices especially if you do a lot of driving. The last issue that you want to look at is how much a car depreciates after you purchase and the end value whenever you are ready to sell.
