Overheating& air conditioner

My son called last night with a problem with his Focus. He is 350 miles from home. Seems his temp gauge rises rapidly when he turns the AC on, but drops if he shuts it off. Coolant levels are fine, and both radiator hoses feel about the same temp. Could this have something to do with a fan relay?

Do the coolant fans come on when the ac is turned on??? If you disconnect the connector to the fans and supplie 12 volt to fans do they work?? Check relay and ECT.

Yes it is a possiblity. He needs to find out if the fans work at all. Disconnect the connector and see if you hook up 12 volt to the fans and see if they work. Could also be the ECT.
