97 tahoe tranny problems.

I have a 97 tahoe that i was driving the other day at about 55-60 mph. Suddenly, the engine revved up and I had no more drive.Nothing at all. I have park and I have ruled out the transfer case as well. I believe it to be either the pump, or the torque converter. Just before this happened, I heard a faint squeal. After it happened, I have a loud ticking noise coming from the bell housing area. My fluid was a little dirty so I changed it. There were no metal shavings in it. The tick went away for a little bit after the fluid and filter change, but came back after revving up the engine a little bit. It just seems odd that it went like that with no other warning beside that squeal I heard. The squeal came about 10 minutes prior to its end. I plan on calling some shops but thought I'd check here as well. I like more than one opinion. Oh yeah, drive shaft isn't turning either, so I ruled out the differential.
Thanks in advance,
Bob

If it holds in park rules out transpher case/drive shaft/rear ends.
Only proper testing will tell you the prioblem.

First check is fluid level and condition.
To check out run a pressure check on transmission pressure and pull flywheel cover and transmission oil pan and see if any metal in bottom of pan.

Could be out of fluid or flywheel broke and not turning converter or sun shell/platary gears side transmission.

When looking for a transmission or repair shop.
Use caution.
Watch chain repair shops and the ones that gives a low ball set price with out tearing down for repair estiamate check.

Check around Ask around
Word of mouth.
Family friends coworkers neighbors business people and delivery people.
Mailmen and parcel delivery people get around and notice a lot of stuff.
Even a good parts house knows what shops are good and not good.
Chamber of commerce and better business bureau and city hall.
If you find a good referral to a repair shop go look them over and talk to them.
Look for a clean looking busy place with nice people running it.
Ask a few questions and ask about their qualifications and training.
Not all places have trained tech/mechanics.
If they do not find a place that does.
Even all dealers do not have all trained techs/mechanics.

Ps
Gm parts offer a rebuilt GM transmission 3 year 50K full warranty parts and labor warranty at any GM dealer.

Re: 97 tahoe tranny problems.

Thanks for the info.... I finally found a used one from a truck that was getting parted out. It's a from a 95 silverado, but it does have the 4L60 Transmission. I do, however have a question about the transfer case. I have the push button controls on mine and all I can get is 2WD and 4WD low. No 4wd high. I am also getting the transfer case from the same truck. The new transfer case I am getting is a floor shift. The only concern I have, will the front axle actuator in my Tahoe work , or do I have to get a different one?

I would check out your old transmission and transfer case controls first.

97-to-95 you will be luckie if anything works.

Beter check out the bone yard interchange book before buying or switching out.
Good Luck

Do you have reverse and manual low still? Any gears at all? The manual transfer case will not work in place of yours without alot of work, "Service 4WD" messages etc.

Re: 97 tahoe tranny problems.

Well, i did do the checks at the boneyards, trans shops and dealers. It seems that the 95 4L60E is all alone. They tell me that it is NOT compatible with any other year trans. However, I made a mistake and the one I went for was a 96, which I was told is compatible.

As for the 4WD, mine is not integrated with the computer. I also found out that everything should work, just have to mount it . Unfortunately, I have to go to the boneyard to get the lever and the interior trim for the floor shift. no big deal really, but I do appreciate the help and advice.

After looking into it, I noticed that there is o access panel underneath to put the floor shifter through. So i believe I will use the original transfer. Are there any ways to test the electronics in the transfer other than having the system flashed? perhaps some sort of bench testing? I was told it could be the encoder motor, but that they were not sure. I would hate to spend the money on parts not needed.

First step in testing would be in truck and truck running and transmission and engine running good.

Then if transfer case does not shift good ckeck all wiring and fuse/power and ground.

Then check for transfer codes.
If the newer AUTO transfer case it can be read out and tested with a transfer case capable scanner.
What shift buttons and shift button lights does it have
What transfer case does it have?
ID tag is on rear of transfer case?
