Air Conditioner Problems

Hello, This week my 99 Dodge Dakota's air conditioner began to act up. The air conditioner was working fine and then all of a sudden the air coming out became warm. Later when I started the vehicle the AC worked again, but only for a brief time and then the same thing happened. This time however, it started working again intermittently. I checked the Charge on the system and it was sky high. This wasn't due to an overcharge as the charge wasn't high before I started having problems. Any ideas to point me in the right direction for a fix would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Chad

Re: Air Conditioner Problems

Next time it "gets warm" stop, open hood, is a/c clutch engaged? If not, tap on front of clutch with a blunt object (as in hammer handle) -

If clutch engages,- keep reading - then you have a compressor air gap issue (distance between clutch driver and pulley face is too great) - factory air gap spec is .020" - you can adjust the gap by removing clutch driver and removing a shim

Re: Air Conditioner Problems

Mine was doing similar and it turned out to be the electric fan. If I was sitting still there wasn't enough air moving over the condenser and it overheated causing the AC to overpressure and shut down. Once it cooled down or if I was moving it worked fine.
