Wip - bmw z3

Hello,

ok, while I'm waiting for the new kit to arrive for my Honda S2000, I have moved on to the BMW Z3.

The body has been sanded and together with the underside washed in some All purpose Gel Cleaner

Noob Question Alert: Should I be attaching the Mirrors and Side Vents on to the body before I primer and spray? I thought that I need to do that because the parts will fuse better with the plastic rather than put them on later over the paint.

Depends if you are going to paint the same color with the body or not. If you paint them body color then yes, better attach them at the beginning and then blend them in before the first color layer hits the body.

Re: Wip - bmw z3

I would attach the side vents before painting and the mirrors - after. It's way too easy to knock the mirrors off when sanding/polishing the paint

Re: Wip - bmw z3

Ok, quick update. I have attached the vents and the mirrors and leaving it to dry for an hour before it goes for a quick rinse and prime.

Re: Wip - bmw z3

Cool, this is a great little kit, you should have fun with it. I did one years ago and really enjoyed it.

I'm with Ales, I would have attached the mirrors afterwards. Reason being is that they will be very fragile while you are painting the body- so be careful with them! There isn't really a right or wrong answer for when to attach them- just that each offers its own advantage/disadvantage.

How are you planning to paint it? If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Re: Wip - bmw z3

Well, I'm thinking of a metallic red or black with black interior on both. I haven't decided on the body color yet.

But I do have a question about primer. I have used the search feature but nothing specific to my question.

I have red conflicting statements about sanding primer. I thought that primer is intended to show up imperfections for you to be able to correct it. So if I am not supposed to sand in between priming layers, how am I supposed to correct the imperfections?

Sorry if it is a stupid question but noobs tend to ask them :P

You should always sand the primer layers until they are very smooth, otherwise the texture of the primer will show through your paint layers.

Re: Wip - bmw z3

Ok, So Im in the process of priming and was wondering whether someone could give me guidance on how to get this piece of hair out of the body before I lay down some paint on it. I really hate the idea of having to sand it out but if that what needs to be done, then I will. If so, will I need to wash again before I lay down paint??

Re: Wip - bmw z3

Just sand it out with, for example, 1500 grit sandpaper. And yes, afterwards you probably should wash the body.

Re: Wip - bmw z3

how about I ask a question for you to answer instead of just telling you what to do?
if you don't sand it, what would you do?
