Rought Idle/Smoke

Hey

I have a 93 GP 3.4 that 90% of the time when I start it up it runs really rough for about 20-30 seconds tops and smokes pretty bad. It finally stops and runs fine after that. Any ideas? Thanks

Re: Rought Idle/Smoke

You have something leaking into one of your cylinders , White smoke would be antifreeze,Black smoke would be gas, Blue smoke would be oil

I checked to see what type of smoke cause I haven't really paid attention but this time it just ran rough and then smoothed out but no smoke. Leaning towards antifreeze since I did have to add some the other day. I'll check back when I can see what type of smoke it is.

Re: Rought Idle/Smoke

Depending on the color of the smoke I would say you either have a bad head gasket (coolant leak, white smoke) or a leaky injector (black smoke) causing your engine to start flooded making it stall, after the second time either fluid has vaporized making your car start normally.

Re: Rought Idle/Smoke

Well it still won't smoke now after sitting for a day but it still idles rough at first and then runs like a champ. If it was coolant wouldn't my oil be milkly? Like I said it happends randomly but of course when I finally ask about it it won't smoke for me to find the problem.

Not necessarily, depending on the type of leak, maybe there is a small crack on the cylinder wall and coolant is leaking into that cylinder, if that's the case there might be no oil mixing with the coolant.

Another option would be only a very small amount of coolant is mixing with oil, if that's the case you'll need to add coolant but you won't see any milky oil.

Big leaks (like bad gaskets) will cause milky oil.

Have you checked for any vacuum leaks?.

Re: Rought Idle/Smoke

Finally smoked and for almost 5 minutes. Got a good smell of it and smells like coolant and it's white smoke. So far none in oil. Thinking its just time before it finally goes which I wouldn't be surprised with 197,513 and only bought it for $600 2 years ago. I guess I'll be taking it out in the two tracks to have some fun before I scrap it.

Re: Rought Idle/Smoke

Haha yeah its just really not worth it. I may look into a 3.1 to put in it since the car itself is solid. If not I'll have a good time in the woods.
