replacing 3800 engine

99 Pk Ave (k) motor. Have been told by parts counter people in local Buick dealership that 98-05 will work, is this true or is the field for choice of engines more/less wide?

Also if I stick in a turbocharged unit (know I need tranny also) does ECU simply have to be reprogramed for L67 spec's or do I need to replace ECU. Hearing I need engine harness, some say both engine and dash. not sure what to believe. Dealership wont advise here but I know it can be done. Just trying for more options with this route plus a little fun possibly.
Any info deeply appreciated.
