caon you replace a series iii motor with a series ii 3800 engine?

I own a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. I took it to have some work done at Pep Boys here in Gainesville, FL and after spending $2200 there I brought my car home and it wouldn't start back up. I come to find out that my car made it home and now the engine is blown and won't turn over.

Pep Boys said that the car had plenty of oil and doesn't know why it won't start. I want to put a new engine in my car and have a few questions maybe you guys can help me with.

1. Can I replace my stock series II 3800 Supercharged v6 with the newer series III engine that comes in the new Grand Prix? And how hard of a change would it be if it is possible.

2. Does anyone know any respectable, honest place that I can buy an engine from online? I've found a few places but I don't want to buy a used engine because there is no way to really guarantee how many miles are really on the vehicle. And do you know where I can get a supercharged to go with it, if it isn't included with the engine.

Stick with the series 2 as it is a direct bolt in. You would have a host of issues putting a series 3 in the car, it would not be impossible but there are a lot of series 2 engines out there at a reasonable price. Contact Ed Morad at morad parts company. He is on the web just do a search. He can get you an engine at a reasonable cost as he specializes in Grand Prix's and other GM cars. If you want a new engine check with gmpartsdirect.com for a crate motor.

How about finding out what failed and see if the 2200 spent has any connection, then pursuing pep Boys?

I agree with Max here. If I just spent $2200 bucks and then my car blew up, I'd be going after the shop it just came from.

I wonder how many Series II's brand new are still left. They stopped producing the engine and went to III 2 years ago, so it can't be that many.

Believe me there are still new ones out there you just need to go to a GM dealer to purchase one. Of course they will probably cost 4-6 grand depending on which dealer but the Series II engine is still available. I also have to agree about going after Pep Boys! If my engine blew up after they serviced it guess who would foot the bill for the repair!
