The alternator in my 98 Cherokee Sport died on me the other day and I was wondering if anyone knew an easy way or tips on changing it out. Where exactly its located and if I have to remove the tensioner to get the belt off. I haven't had the chance to take a good look under the hood its been raining here for days and I haven't owned the Jeep for too long.

Re: 98 Jeep Cherokee Sport Alternator
If it's the same as my '99 4.0 was, the alternator should be in easy reach. You'll need to remove the serpentine belt first. To do that, look on the idler arm (the wheel with nothing else attached to it). There should be a square hole about 1/2 way down the arm. This is where you put your 1/2" drive socket driver. Apply tension against the spring, and the serpentine will loosen. Once you have it off you'll be able to start on the alternator.
For alternator removal, there will be 2 bolts holding it on, and an electrical connection (or more, depending on the 98 design). Disconnect the electrical connections and move them out of the way; then loosen the bolts holding the alternator on. Installation just the reverse.....post back if you have any questions.
