You should be able to trace the fuel line from the carb back towards the fuel tank, the filter will be fitted inline somewhere

Gm carberators have the fuel filter inside carb.
Remove the gas line and then the fitting/nut deal where the gas line hooks to carb.
You will need a 5/8 line flare wrench to get gas line lose but some may be 9/16 or even a 1/2 in nut on line and also a 1 in wrench to hold and the remove the nut from carb.
Thake care there is a spring beteen carb and filter and a plastic sealing ring on the nut and do not stire up any shavings or dirt that will go into carb.
I always blow the filter area out withn aier when changing them.
The fuel filter may be a short or long paper fuel filter or some older carb used a rock type filter.
Short filters are about a in long and long filters close to 2 in long.
If you are changing a lon ways from parts place get both and take back the one not used.
Also check the fuel line from carb back for any add on inline fuel filters.
Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

Re: 1979 g20 fuel fillter

An add-on filter is a good idea in a GM carbureted vehicle. Your gas tank may be original, 32 years old with some dirt and rust accumulation. The stock filters are very small and easily blocked. When they do get blocked, they are spring loaded so they will lift off their seat, allowing unfiltered fuel into the carb which will block the carb jets.

So a nice, big universal in-line filter is a good idea, to suppliment the stock one.
