97 Conti Driver Window quit

I have a 1997 Continental. The driver's side front window stopped operating last week. Worked fine prior to that. My first guess was that the motor died. I took the door panel off and direct wired power to the motor. Window cycles up and down. Since the motor isn't the problem, I assumed it was the switch. I bought a used switch off ebay for $27. Switch arrived today. I swapped it in and....same problem. All the other window switches work, except the drivers front.

Not the window motor, not the switch. What's next? Anyone have a wiring diagram so I can check for power to the switch?

Anyone need an extra switch? I have 2 now....haha.

Re: 97 Conti Driver Window quit

There should be a black plastic module behind the door panel, up and toward the hinge side. Almost guarentee you thats it. Very hard to find a replacement. All the used ones are hurt in the same way and ford discontinued them. I ended up getting 4 relays and bypassing it. let me know if you are going to end up doing that and I will see if I can find my notes from the wiring. Good luck

Re: 97 Conti Driver Window quit

Thanks for the reply. I took a cursory look at the wiring behind the door panel tonight, just looking for any obvious breaks or chaffing of wires. Everything looks fine. Lincoln does a nice job packaging and securing the wiring harnesses.
I understand what you are saying about junk-yard parts not being an option for this module.
Just to verify, you are saying that the module is not available at the Dealer, or the aftermarket?

Re: 97 Conti Driver Window quit

Last one i did was beginning of this winter. Around here none of the wreckers have any and the dealer discontinued them and they are not available aftermarket so I guess ford decided when it goes you need a new car. Be careful if you find one used because they are known for it, at least around here anyways. Check power and ground at the switch and make sure its good but not getting to the motor and that is for sure it. I am putting together a diagram for it anyways for a friend here so i can scan it and send it to you.

Re: 97 Conti Driver Window quit

I got the window working today, and it wasn't what I thought it was going to be. I finally got my hands on the wiring diagram for the power windows. My brother has a scan tool, and we used this to check to power window circuit. Everything checked out ok with the drivers door window switch, yet it still didn't work. So we grabbed some wire and jumped direct power to the switch, nothing. Then we checked for ground (probably should have done this first). NO GROUND!
Took that same spare wire and touched one end to the negative battery terminal and the other end to the ground terminal coming into the switch. Bingo, window starts working!
After spending some time looking for possible breaks in the ground, we decided to just create a new ground instead. I screwed a new wire to the door and spliced it into the existing ground wire to the switch, just before it enters the module.
That was it. The switch lost ground, we gave it a new ground, and I am back in business.
