Intermittent Oil Light 2005 Grand Caravan

Hey,
The oil light come intermittently. The oil level is fine, oil and filter change about a month agbe? Noticed that it happens on extermely cold days after the van has been sitting overnight.Any ideas on what it could be and what I should be looking for?

Re: Intermittent Oil Light 2005 Grand Caravan

Most likely, the oil sending unit is bad. It screws into the block near the oil filter.

My 04 Durango's sender failed the same way. First start of the day when cold, light would stay on. If you shut it off, the restart the light would go out.

Not expensive, and not hard to change.

Yup, flip a coin and chose between connecting a direct pressure gauge to verify the actual pressure or just change the sender.

Seems that if the light goes on, if I turn off the van then back on, the light goes off. This tell me that it is probably the sending unit not the pump.Any comments on this?

Without installing a known good mechanical gauge to test the true oil pressure any other thoughts or opinions are pure speculation and not going to give any real definitive answer. You really should temporarily install a mechanical gauge to get the correct answer.

I don't know the exact specs, but I would worry if I saw it drop below 20PSI at any time. I'd have to guess that 30+ would be the specs.

The oil light comes on when the computer thinks the pressure is below that. That does not mean quantifiably that it is indeed that low. You cannot trust dashboard gauges and lighs to be anything more than a warning, never take them as they are not for diagnosing purposes.
