starter very loud

Whats up guys. Well to start things off i have 2000 ls v8. I havent driven car in 5 days until yesterday i moved it from one side of driveway to the other with no problems. Today i went to start it and the starter was very lound while turning over, but wouldnt start. After trying for about 10 minutes i started smelling gas so i stopped and put a scan tool on ,no codes. I was wondering could a starter even though its turning engine over cause the engine not to start. Like i said it ran fine yesterday even though the past couple of months it seemed like the battery was getting week, the weather had been really cold. Today charged battery ,but still doing the same thing. The starter sounds like its laboring to turn engine over. thanx for any help.

Re: starter very loud

The starter won't cause the engine to not start. Even in the event the starter were engaged while the engine is running, it won't cause the engine to stall.

However, if the engine is not turning over fast enough because of a weak starter, or more likely, a weak battery, that can prevent the engine from starting.

You might also try holding the throttle wide open (WOT or Wide Open Throttle, aka "clear flood mode") as this will shut off the fuel injectors and allow cylinders that are flooded with fuel to clear. In the event the starter sounds labored due to a flood condition, this would help.

How old is the battery that's in your car? These cars are very sensitive to healthy batteries.

Re: starter very loud

Tanx shorod. wot started right up. Think starter is going bad because its loud as hell while turning over. The battery is less than a year old,but i hooked a battery tester and put load on it and it dropped to 10 volts.Went back up to just under 12v.

Re: starter very loud

Well, if you properly loaded it an it dropped to 10 volts it would seem that battery is less than healthy. If you have a charger, you might fully charge it and try the load test again. If you get the same results, then you should consider changing it out for a new battery before it leaves you stranded.
