anyone replaced their ABS ECM without it fixing MIL?

hi gang,

going over several pages of info as i try to get rid of this intermittent ABS lamp on my '02 w/ 142k miles. no traction control on this van but the tire pressure low lamp also comes on a bit. got the codes scanned at o'reillys:
c1155 LF Anti Lock Brake Sensor (Electrical/Static)
c1233 Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Input Signal Missing
u1262 comm bus fault

sensor was replaced with no difference.
trivia info: cruise control will not turn off using the steering wheel button, only brake pedal. SCDS recall was performed, no leaking visable.

so i'm tempted to replace the ABS module, but curious if anyone has done that *without* it fixing your problem? i'm second guessing myself but i'd hate to think the corrosion on the tone rings could be causing this.

tia,
parker

Re: anyone replaced their ABS ECM without it fixing MIL?

After looking at your codes I think you fault is indeed in the left front sensor area, or wiring, and not the abs module. Corrosion, cracks, rust, dirt.missing teeth, and loose bracket on the sensor housing can all cause the fault. The wiring connection all the way from the wheel to the communications network box could be faulty also. You will need to clear the DTC's with your scan tool and retest as you go thru testing procedures.

The ABS is your traction control, you may be saying that your vehicle does not have the additional stability assist (Called AdvanceTrak)

The cruise control switch is probably a bad switch on your steering wheel, you will need to remove and test that.

Anti-Lock Control — Traction Control

PINPOINT TEST G: DTC C1145 RF, C1155 LF, C1165 RR, C1175 LR — ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SENSOR INPUT FAILURE

C1155 ³ LF Wheel Speed Sensor ³ ABS ³ Go to Pinpoint Test G. ³
³ ³ Input Failure ³

CAUTION:
The Flex Probe Kit must be used for all test connections. Use of standard multimeter probes may damage wiring terminals.
² G1: CHECK FOR FAULT REPEATABILITY
² G2: CHECK THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SENSOR COIL RESISTANCE WITH WIRING HARNESS
² G3: DETERMINE THE SENSOR RESISTANCE
² G4: CHECK THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SENSOR CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
² G5: CHECK FOR AN INTERNAL SENSOR SHORT
² G6: TEST FOR INTERMITTENT ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SENSOR FAULT

Anti-Lock Control — Traction Control

PINPOINT TEST J: DTCS C1233 LF, C1234 RF, C1235 RR, C1236 LR, C1222 — ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SENSOR SIGNAL MISSING OR ERRATIC, WHEEL SPEED MISMATCH
C1233 ³ LF Wheel Speed Sensor ³ ABS ³ Go to Pinpoint Test J. ³
³ ³ Signal Missing or Erratic ³ ³

² J1: RETRIEVE THE DTCS
² J2: REPEATABILITY DRIVE TEST (MISMATCHED OUTPUT)
² J3: CHECK FOR DTC REPEATABILITY
² J4: CHECK THE SUSPECT ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SENSOR INDICATOR

Re: anyone replaced their ABS ECM without it fixing MIL?

Also could be some dirt/corrosion at the ABS module connector, I would unplug it and give it a good clean with contact cleaner, it has happened before to my lincoln.

Best regards,

Oscar.

500 miles since replacing the ECM and all continues to be fine. i didn't inject the data into the module as the ford repair guide mentions. will update if something changes.

I'm pleased your ABS repair project appears to be working out! I replaced my ABS module some time ago - and have had no further problems - so let's hope for the best!

Good to know it's doing fine, most users never give any feedback. Thanks for letting the forum know about it!

I also recently replaced mine ('99 3.8, 308k miles). Seems OK now. Kinda pricey part replacement. My second replacement ... seem to get about 120k miles before it goes belly-up!

Re: anyone replaced their ABS ECM without it fixing MIL?

holy *****, mine was $500.xx from ford. was your amount much different? did you notice any revision level difference on your parts? AA to AB, etc.?

here's mine.

looks like mine went from a F to a H

and you're aware of TSB 02-7-5? it basically says they are aware of issues with the low tire warning lamp saying on after 1 or 2 tires have been replaced. the ECM was too picky [like a true AWD setup] and wouldn't give leeway. their fix was to replace the ECM.
i have it and can scan it or post.

Re: anyone replaced their ABS ECM without it fixing MIL?

Something else I just discovered: There is now someone who will repair Windstar ABS modules. Just go to eBay and search on "Windstar ABS repair." You send your module to them - and they fix it and return it to you. They're charging $99 plus shipping.

This wasn't available when I replaced my module - but I was aware that it existed for other vehicles. A friend of mind had an Audi whose ABS module failed. It turns out that electrolytic capacitor failures are common in that module, and someone started a business repairing them. My friend used this service - and it worked fine for him. If the Windstar ABS repair service provider knows what they're doing - and has the right tools and equipment - it is likely to be successful.

Has anyone tried it? Please share your results!

Here's a picture of my old and new ABS modules (old on the left; new on the right):

My module replacement went from a "K" to an "L" - but I have a different part number (mine ends in "001"; yours ends in "003").
