Battery ran dead now speedometer doesn't work
Hey guys. I wrecked my 99 GMC yesterday. In the midst of all of us being around the crash site, my mother's base model 03 Neon had it's hazards on for a while (an hour or so? probably longer) ran the battery down. We had it jumped off and then we noticed the the speedometer wouldn't work anymore. (It would come up a slight bit, recognizing that there is power to the stepper motor but not going up in vehicle speed)
Any ideas as to where to look? However, there have been DTC's coming on P0700 "Trans control system malfunction", and P562 "System low voltage" but I read it up that both codes are somewhat related. P1604 has been coming on also but we know about this already but we haven't taken care of it, but it's not harming the car any. The rest of the cluster works though. Thanks in advance.

Re: Battery ran dead now speedometer doesn't work
Since this is a vehicle specific question, I moved from "Engineering/Technical" to the 2nd Gen Neon forum. These folks will probably have more knowledge on if the BCM is common to go out on these.

Re: Battery ran dead now speedometer doesn't work
I would look for hidden corrosion on one or both of the battery terminals or a weak battery, possibly it has a very weak cell.
P1604 is "PCM internal dual-port RAM read/write integrity failure". The test checks for power to the PCM with key on. Still could point to a weak battery, bad connections or bad pcm. I would do a thorough check of the battery and cables. |

The battery terminals are somewhat corroded, I'll clean them up and see what kind of response I get from that. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a weak battery also, we had a harsh freeze over down here. Thanks. I'll try to see if that helps any at all.

Re: Battery ran dead now speedometer doesn't work
Low voltage start up can cause problems. It is possible that the needle flipped all the way around and is now on the bottom side of the stop. If this is the problem you can pull the cluster lens and turn the needle counter clockwise. Some can be returned by doing the cluster diagnostics. Push and hold the trip reset button down and turn the ignition and then release the button.

Re: Battery ran dead now speedometer doesn't work
Ok I cleaned the battery terminals and took off the corrosion on the battery, terminals and cables...still no luck. Replace the battery should be the next step, right?

Battery tested bad, then replaced it...It still didn't work...And I had seen it in the right light and it is stuck on the other side of the needle stop. And just done the reset...All is good now. The situation has been resolved.
