Keyless fobs that don't work.

Hi all,

I had a couple of keyless fobs for my '98 pontiacs that seemed to stop working. I went online and ordered new buttons and cleaned the pads on the Printed Wiring Board (PWB) and even glued some tin foil on the bottons and I could not get my fob to work consistently. It would work about one out of every 4 times and was getting worse. Well, I finally determined the cause. I looked at the Integrated Circuit (IC) under a microscope and noticed that some of the pins had bad solder connections to the PWB. Evidently, when the buttons start to wear out, it forces you to press harder on them, which flexes the PWB and breaks the pin solder connections. So, if you are having this problem, touch up all the pin connections from the IC with a soldering gun.

Good find!

Chances are the fix works for other models, and even other brands as these things are usually made by a 3rd party

Yeah I agree, thanks for the info. Mine seems to be doing the same thing. Maybe I should just buy a new remote.

But not a flaky third party or aftermarket brand Tim. Stick with the OE GM keyfobs.
