eec realy problem

I have a 2001 F-150 withthe 5.4 engine. I purchased it used and it occasionally wouldn't start. I was told by a mechanic at the dealer where I bought it used that he had replaced the eec sensor (i believe he meant relay) and that it had not been making good contact. I checked the relay (located just inside the driver's side fender near the firewall) and saw that it had been black taped to the relay connector. I made sure it was into the connector all the way and then I made sure that the leads were all pressed firmly into the connector. The engine started immediately.

I noticed that all of the wires going into the connector are black and I assume that the connnector was replaced somewhere along the way. Nonetheless, once in a while the problem has occurred and each time it has i just make sure the wires are firmly pressed into the connector and the engine starts. I have been meaning to replace the connector but haven;t gotten around to it as the problem doesn't occur that often and when it does I know what the cause is.

That being said, things evolved today. While driving the engine cut off completely and when I pulled over it wouldn't start. I opened the hood pressed the wires into the connector and it started with no problem. I drove a few miles and it cut off again. This time, without pulling over, I placed it in Neutral and the engine engine re-started. This happened a few more times before I eventually got home. Now, although, I know there was a pre-existing problem with the relay connector, I'm not sure that is the issue this time. After the first occurrence I pressed the wires firmly into the connector and the 4 or 5 times it happened after that there were no noticeable bumps in the road that might have jarred the wires loose.

The questions I have are: where can I find a correct wiring diagram for the relay? As I said all of the wires are black with no indication of color coding.
Also,in the past I recall finding a website with a step by step procedure for changing the relay and connector for both the EEC and the fuel pump relays. Has anyone come across this and if so do you have a link?

Lastly, other than the EEC relay being the cause, what else could have caused the dying while driving problem?

Thanks for any help,

Tony
