1997 corolla acceleration problem

I have a 1997 corolla with 283K miles. Whenever I accelerate, the car starts vibrating and losses power. I also noticed the engine light start flashing several times and then just stayed on. In park, problem cannot be duplicated. I've replaced the fuel filter and checked the ignition wires. Any ideas?

what size of motor? and clutch or maual?
