305 With 80,000 Miles Failed Oil Pump?????

I never saw one drop dead with that many miles unless it was hammered and this one wasn't as near as anyone can tell. Not my truck so not sure of the year, I think it's an 06 but could be an 03. It belongs to a friend of mine so not all the particulars are completely clear.
Guy's wife was driving it down the interstate as usual and oil pressure went to zero and I guess she drove it 5 miles that way. He had a wrench he trusts look at it and the guy said he wasn't sure the cam bearings aren't tossed. When my buddy had it running in the yard he said it didn't sound like it was overly noisy. I can assume he knows the sound of valve clatter as he has wrenched on enough of them himself.
I never heard of a chevy v8 blowing an oil pump that early in life though all I have ever had were 327 and 350's. Is there something about the 305 he should know since he is looking to get another used one with around 60K miles for $700. Is it better for him to switch it for a 350 or would it create problems mating to the 4spd auto?

HAVE PROBLEMS WITH YOUR VEHICLE/ENGINE COMBO !

exactly what year and model is this truck ?

IF this is a 2001-2010 your engines would be 4.3 v6 ,4.8, 5.3, 6.0 engines ..

305 engine was used in light duty trucks prior to 1999 ..not a good engine for a truck which is why the 5.7 engine was mostly used.

any engine can have damage over low miles ...this 305 engine I would guess is 20 plus yrs old..

pull the distributor see if the gears/rod is broken /worn

also since your a rust belt area , oil pan may have rust hole ..

I finally found out, its a Silverado crew cab 2004 with 5.3. Where I got the 5/0 who knows, all I ever had was a couple 327's in old Camaros and 350's in trucks. He dug up a guaranteed used one not too far away from here for 650 and for another 135 they guaranteed it for a year and would pay up to 50 / hour for the reinstall if shits da bed. Seems like a good deal to me. I hear that mill has a composite intake manifold. I never was much on plastic anything unless it;s the gun I have to tote 8 hours a day. How do those crack up anyways???

the 5.3L engine is in my 2000 siL. I find that it has a good amount of power , so far the engine has had no failures.

the most important thing to do with these engines is replace the coolant 3-4 yrs with GM APPROVED dexcool 65% , use distilled water 35% .

next use synthetic 5-30wt oil with a wix/purolator pure one oil filter.

use the ac delco irridium plugs.

closing in on 130,ooomi. uses 1/3qt every 8,ooomi. which is when the synthetic oil is replaced..

use NEW Exhaust manifold bolts ...they are known to break..

good luck ..

Yea I hear you on the exhaust bolts. Seems like all the Chevys like to bust off if you live in the rust belt. The ones on my 90 did too but I managed to drill it out and nut from the top. At least mine worked that way. What is the big deal with the Dex cool anyways? We have that in my daughters 2.2 Ecotec Cavalier and I always thought it was for the aluminum engine. Never thought it benefited the old fashioned iron engines.
At any rate I wish this poor fool luck as last winter he drained his 77 305 Mercriuiser last year and missed a tiny pocket of water inside probably from it sitting a tad crooked. Cracked the block internally somewhere which sucked enough but then he got another 77 350 for $250 half apart which is a deal for a marine mill. Somehow someone had changed it to a post 86 crank which used the new one piece rear main seal. Didn't fit the coupler so it was back apart all over again. I told him to keep the hell away from me since he had become a pure POO MAGNET I'm bettin that if his wife hadn't been the one drivin the truck that the problem would have gotten noticed in time as well. Sux Being him this year...........

Re: 305 With 80,000 Miles Failed Oil Pump?????

dexcool is required so gm says in this engine. this is to protect the components used for seals as well as the aluminum corrosion protection..

with dirty tap/well water that has metals and corrosive chemicals this creates a conductive SOUP ... THEN THE LEAKS START..

not using the higher concentration adds to all of this...

using non dexcool , reacts with the leftover dexcool to cause a blocking mess in the heatercore / radiator..

I change this coolant 3-4yrs and with distilled water it still LOOKS GOOD..

with boat engines draining the block is step one , step 2 is ADDING full strength coolant until it flows out..

I have the mcm 470. with this I use 75% silicate coolant with 25% distilled water...only had to do that front cover water pump once..

1979 engine..ran great this summer no problems !
