2000 grand am 3.4
ok did a head job on the car about a year ago and have had a problem with the car since it runs fine when u r on the road driving but when u first crank it up you have to hold the gas to keep it running and even after the motor warms up it still has a skip to it when u stop the interior lights also dim when u let off the gas and the serpinten belt squeals when u first cranck it up

Re: 2000 grand am 3.4
It shouldn't deflect much at all, let alone feel loose. To be honest, the best belt I've found are the cheap valucraft belts from Autozone. I'd never purchase any other valucraft product, but these belts work great on the 3400.
You might try pulling the plugs and inspecting them. Anything other than Platinum is known to foul on these motor. They can't handle the waste spark. |

Re: 2000 grand am 3.4
It's not the belt!
your car could almost run fine without a belt! however if I'm not mistaken the water pump is on the alternator belt too, so would overheat quickly. Another issues would be with the air conditionner as the compressor is there. And of course your battery would run dead soon... So, beside those "small" things, it can'T do anything else. When you redid the head, could you have messed up the timing? Are you sure you reconnected every sensor correctly? What about every vaccum lines? Could dust have entered the MAF sensor? |

Re: 2000 grand am 3.4
He said the belt is squeaking at start up. It could be slipping. If the belt feels loose it's definitely a problem. The car can run without a belt until the battery dies and car overheats. The WP and Alt need the belt to operate properly.

Re: 2000 grand am 3.4
I was refering to the stalling issue.
Yes there is a problem with the belt, but that is not what cause the stalling. |
