door handle won't operate
I have a '99 Yukon. The driver's door handle just stopped operating the other day. Is this is a relatively simple fix? How does the interior door panel come off?

Re: door handle won't operate
there is a special tool to pop the plastic pins loose. you didnt say was it the inside or outside handle. if i was you i would take it to a shop. thats what i did, i figured it was worth the $35 they charged me for labor

Re: door handle won't operate
I have a '99 Yukon that I bought back in February, it's been a great truck except for the driver side door being very hard to open. The last few days it would refuse to open at all, leaving me to either put the window down and open it that way, or, sometimes it won't open even then, so I have to slide to the passenger side and get out that way. A few nights ago, I went to get out and the handle just falls loose in the slot and hangs there... Is this an easy fix if I can get the door panel off? I am a single mom of two and really can't worry about spending even $35 to fix something so silly.
Thanks for any and all help : ) |

Re: door handle won't operate
I fix 3 or 4 of these a year...handle linkage gets worn, handle can't travel far enough to trigger door latch. Owner gets pissed, eventually breaks the handle off from tugging so hard.
Handles are color coded and readily available on Ebay $32...easy to replace, just pull door panel off as described above. The trick is to find and fix this before owner breaks it off....I open panel, and put a couple of slight bends on the linkage. to shorten it enough to always trigger the latch-- done about a dozen this way....happens on all four doors too, just a matter of how often they are used.. My Dually had three doors do it.....

Re: door handle won't operate
Thank you for your reply, but no I didn't abuse my baby, lol. The handle is still attached to the door, and it won't pull out of the door, it just hangs there. It's almost as if something just fell off inside. I have tried to see if the handle itself would come away from the door, but gently pulling on it, it doesn't. Do you think it's just a case of a part having fell off, and if I take the panel off myself could I reattach it? I'm proud of this truck and don't want it to fall into disrepair, but the monthly maintenance on it is enough on my budget.

Re: door handle won't operate
Yours is cracked at the base, just not completely broken, you will need a new handle- you can see all the details when you pull door panel off.
