Italeri Ferrari 288 GTO 1:24

And yet another one that is way past its due by date.

As you can see, this one was started literally years ago but too many started kits meant that this got put back in the box and left behind but I finally got my head down to pick out the finishing details and photographing it.


The shape of this kit is generally very good with the only bugbear being that the body is perhaps a bit thick in places but the molded open gills at the rear 3/4 is a nice touch.
After all these years, I still think this is one of the classic side profiles.


And the top down is still to die for.




The kit includes nice little touches like seperate chromed cavallino for the front grill and a black one for the rear panel.



Engine detail is nicely registered and while perhaps a bit over-sized, especially when you compare it to the Fujimi kit but is perfectly workable and makes adding your own details much easier.



When I was snapping away, I thought I'd take a few from different zoom ranges to show you guys what I mean by not always or just using macro up close. In the last two shots of this little set, the object was framed in pretty much the same space from the same angle. The difference in result is due to one being taken with macro up close and the other being taken from afar using a little zoom.
Of course a tripod helps when light is low.
For those interested, I also tend to take photos with a UV filter and a Polariser.

I've never really been taken by the styling of these Ferrari's but you've got a very good looking model there with a wonderful paint job. In fact the paint still looks wet I'd probably go crazy polishing around the grills on the engine cover though.

Only because you mentioned it and because I am one of those interested, a UV filter will do nought to these type of photos. Technically speaking, you'll get optically better performance with it off. In a few of your photos that show the windows, there is evident 'rainbowing' which is likely due to the polariser not being at the correct angle to block the polarised light. Of course if you made the decision for it to look like that, then fair enough. Otherwise I would suggest rotating it until the glare is reduced to maximise the benefits of having the filter on. Apologies if you've already taken all the necessary steps....studying Photography, I enjoy getting to talk techie about cameras

well, I find that the UV cuts down on the occasional blue effect you get when photographing on a white background in daylight.
I also find my camera finds it easier to get the right white/colour balance with it on when in daylight.
I use a single plane polariser as opposed to a circular polariser so I can rotate the filter to adjust/control the type of reflections I get and where-abouts on the body it is
i.e mostly on side of car or mostly on roof/top of car
depending on the shot so it's not really glare that I'm too concerned with.

Of course, I'm no photographer so the UV thing might be purely psychosomatic.

And I did go crazy polishing around the hood vents.
If you look closely, I went a bit too crazy and snapped one of the cross bars.
It normally sits back in place but in some of these it seems to have nudged out of position again.


And yes, I think this is an under-rated gem of a kit.
I have the Fujimi Enthusiast kit around somewhere but the thought of it and its little tiny pieces of very soft plastic and miniscule joins sends shivers down my spine.
If you want to be able to finish a 288GTO in reasonable time, this is the one to get.

Awesome paint finish and a great overall result, wouldn't have thought that an Italeri kit could look so good! I too think it is a great shape although I always thought the door mirrors looked too big on the GTO (presumably to meet daft safety regulations?!).

Great looking model! Paint looks flawless. Wish Italeri would reissue some of their other Ferrari kits, like the 250SWB, 275GTB and Nart Spyder and of course the California Spyder (even tho I already have them all)

You did a great job, superclean finish, good looking engine and great photos .

Just onr thing: IMO it looks as it would sit a little bit high ?!?!

i had 1 question though, why is the rainbow effect appeared on the 288 but not on the 308 because i love those rainbow effect but always can't capture them
