98 Malibu LX 2.4; dies after few miles ; will start again after about 1/2 hour
Runs fine then abruptly dies.
Changed fuel pump & filter. Still dies after several miles and will NOT start. Let it sit for a while and it starts as normal. Any thoughts? |

Thanks for your help.
Ignition Module was changed as well (brand new one). It is still doing the same thing. What else could it be? |

When it dies and won't start, do you have fuel pressure? Also, are there any codes set or lights displayed on the dash?

Re: 98 Malibu LX 2.4; dies after few miles ; will start again after about 1/2 hour
Don't know about the fuel pressure because it always dies while on the road and, by the time it gets to the shop, it works fine again. Remember, the fuel pump was one of the first suspect and was replaced along with filter.
Ignition module was also replaced. There are no codes showing and there are no odd lights on dash. When it dies, it cranks fine but won't start. Several minutes later, it starts as if nothing ever happened. |

Re: 98 Malibu LX 2.4; dies after few miles ; will start again after about 1/2 hour
I'm not at all familiar with that model Malibu. However, I know that on some older GM cars contacts on the oil pressure switch feed power to the fuel pump while the engine is running. On cranking, relay contacts bypass the oil pressure switch contacts for about 5 seconds to prime the fuel rail
If that is the case with your model Malibu then it is possible that the contacts on the oil pressure switch are faulty or, the oil pressure sensor is defective or, you have oil pressure on the threshhold of being low. It's possible that after the engine has cooled off there is enough oil pressure to start up again and run. Of course when the engine stalls your oil pressure indicator will come on so it's hard to tell what is taking place. |

So far, items changed are: fuel pump, fuel filter, ignition module, oil pressure switch. All brand new items.
Symptoms are still there; Dies after several miles and restart after it sits for about half-hour. Anyone knows how I can get hold of the electrical diagram for this engine? Quad 4-cyl, 2.4 L . Thanks. |

During that half hour good time to check for lack of spark or fuel pressure.
