Police chip vs. aftermarket performance chip??
I have a 98 Crwn. Vic. intercepter, If I install an after market performance chip instead of keeping the standard police chip: will it cause any problemes?
I have also up-graded to the "e-3" spark plugs, when I had to replace the plastic intake,"what the He$#", I put Magna-flow mufflers with the true duals that came stock and a K&N air filter. It makes Mustangs mad now: to see a 4 door "sedan" out run or put up a good competition with their "Stangs, "

Re: Police chip vs. aftermarket performance chip??
No such thing as a police or "cop chip." The only difference between CVPI and standard civilian models are a higher rear end gear ratio, the aluminum or MMC police driveshaft, a smaller torque converter beginning in model year 2000, and a slightly higher computer limited top speed (although mechanically lower top speed than base civilian models).
Where were you thinking of getting an aftermarket tune from? If you're thinking of a "tune-in-a-can," save your money. They are hardly better than stock if not worse. Getting a custom tune for your car from a reputable tuner will net you performance gains over the factory tune. The biggest enhancements are in the shift schedule which will keep you in your power band around town much better. The tune will also increase spark timing based on the octane profile you choose to increase torque and HP, and increase the rev limiter and speed limiter. You'll need to know the computer code you have installed (a 4 letter/number sticker somewhere on the driver side door area), the rear gears you have (crawl under the rear differential and check the tag, it will probably be a 3 55 but may be a 3 27 in a 1998 CVPI; if there's an L where the space should be, it has a Trac-Loc), and any modifications you've done, if any. I got my tune custom made by Lonnie at Blue Oval Chips. He's the best with these cars. Alternatively, you can go to a local tuning shop and get a dyno tune. It will cost more but can get you a few more horses out of it.
