1/20 Fujimi Ferrari 248F1 w/ super detail set from Hobby Design

Hi everyone,

It has been awhile since I sat down and made anything. It is hard to get myself going nowadays.

I guess it is all about inspiration and motivation! You have to be inspired and motivated to spend valuable hours to create/make something that you love!

I always wanted make this kit and I just sat down and made some progress.

This is one of the Fujimi's F1 kits and I always wanted to make one full blown.

I also got myself a super detail-up set from Hobby Design. I know Fujimi kit has very weak hub/brake details and I really wanted to improve that. This detail kit does fill that gap Fujimi has left out.

Actually, the detail kit itself is a great item to just own. It has so many resin parts including the tranny mounts, and P/E sets to detail the Fujimi kit.

It has several tune-metal parts as well.

The best part is the book, more than 50 pages of 248F1 reference photos for you to get your hands busy.

Lastly, the kit also has the Marlboro decals which you can fully dress up the car properly.

Hopefully, I have enough talent to make the full use of this wonderful set!

First, I started out the assembly by properly dividing the body. I am not sure why Fujimi decided to mold the body like this!

Carefully, I made clean cut of the cowl. I also attached the exhaust panels at this time.

The Hobby Design's detail kit has nose panel detail parts and in order to fully use that, I cut the nose section as well.

Cut out the rear wing mount as well. This one was somewhat tough to do... Done slowly and carefully to not to break off the tip...

Why?! Why! More of Fujimi molding mystery... I hate the putty work like this one...

The Revell version of 1/12 F2002 is still at its original stage, I made absolutely no progress for the past three years! I just hope I find enough motivation and inspiration to continue this build though.

I always like to start out the build with wheels. They are easy to get myself going and you can quickly see the progress. I removed the original chrome coats using "Super Castrol cleaner".

Another "Why"? What was Fujimi trying to do here(B) and (A) does not minimize the chrome coating damage by cutting off from the tree. Hmm... I removed the (A) and (B) regardless.

Hobby Design supply wheels as well. I contemplated for awhile as to which set I should use for the kit. Of course, the Hobby Design's set requires some work, but they feel quite good and heavy in my hands.

After I applied primer, I found that Hobby Design parts were more detailed and looked better. I will go with them.

Alclad aluminum and bit of polishing made the wheels look more like... wheels...

The transmission block on the left is from Hobby Design. Pretty cool!

Wanted to a metal look on the block, I went with a familiar Model Master buffing paint here.

Started some carbon fiber work... Such a long dreadful time consuming work...

I added some "smoke" to the carbon fiber decal to tone down the brightness, but it doesn't look right at all. I will have to do some re-work, but I am happy to report that I made a decent progress so far in a short period time!

Thanks for looking.

Great Start - I've looked at that HD Super Kit myself and I'm keen to see how this all comes together.

Very nice start!

One question about the detail set: does the kit include the reference booklet?

Thanks guys for your interest!!

Hope to build something cool, but it is just a start and there is a chance that I can always screw up.

Yes, the booklet is included in the detail set. I believe you can also buy the book separately for less than US$10 from several online sellers.

I have been studying the photos from the book, it does give good ideas to tackle the detailing!

Re: 1/20 Ferrari 248F1 w/ super detail set from Hobby Design

I have both of these in my stash. This was going to be my next project, but I decided to build the Tamiya F1-2000 with the Top Studio up grade. I have been gathering reference data on the F1-2000, as well as assembling a few sub-assemblies. I am looking forward to watching this build, especially watching how you deal with the poor monocoque design of the kit. So please give us lots of pictures of how you do it.

Great start. I'm not really into F1 lately, but definitely watching this one.

Re: 1/20 Ferrari 248F1 w/ super detail set from Hobby Design

Very interesting so far. I was unaware of the hobby design set and have been staring at the 248 on my shelf, puzzled by the unusual parts layout. They have chosen a strange construction route for the body, I think more builder feedback for some manufacturers would be a great tool for them. I've noticed on sites such as Hyperscale (for aviation and military modellers) that manufacturers give some modellers "test shots" to build, before the kit is available. I do realize that by the time the test shot is available, it may be too late to change the molds, but it's nice to think wishfully! Good luck with the build!

Can't wait to see this one get built. Hope you bring it to Ferrari Expo. Your C6R last year was fantastic(and Enzo the year before!!)!!

The HD resin quality looks good great start!

i notice you prime the metal wheel's lip, then painted it alclad aluminum and polish it..u mean you compound the alclad aluminium or just buff it?

because i tried compound alclad paint but they went off very easily
