98 Windstar with Electric gremlins: Windows, Fan, Turn Signals and Interiors
My problem first started back during the summer. The van did not seem to have enough juice to start but only on some days(longer trip did not equal better charge)
I had owned the van for a couple of years so I replaced the battery. It worked well for a while then the same problem. I figured the alternator might be getting tired so I changed it for one from my other 98WS that was only a year old. I went and had them test the battery at 24hr Walmart(where I needed the battery late at night) and they reported it to be good. Then the Gremlins started to play! A few days later on a hot day the windows in the van would not go down. I was still having intermittent battery discharge problems. I was carrying my old battery as a spare. But a few days later the windows started working again. A had to do a trip and was nervous but the van ran fine so headed out. Windows were working great. Turn signals were not working?? 3 hours into the trip they started working again and I have not had another TS problem in a month. On the trip back we had the windows down during the day and when it started to cool off, the windows would not go up again... I put on a sweater and gave my wife a sleeping bag and we made it home. I pulled the door apart and everything looked normal. I put 12v to the window motor and put the window up. I did the same to other door. The windows have not started working again since. Power locks work fine A week later the fan motor stopped working. Heat/AC switch still worked but the switch to turn on the fan did not work?? A few days later it worked again. Next day not again and a week later it did not work on the way there but worked on the way back. Has not worked since then Through this all I have not been sure what the draw on the battery is so I pull off a battery terminal at night, then it starts fine the next day. Also the interior lights stopped working. Last few days the interiors started working again when the doors were open, and the delay when you leave the vehicle was working, but the ceiling light would not work from the dash switch and the neither of the ceiling map spots work. I did notice that earlier that if I turned on one of the ceiling map spots it would come on briefly dim then not work again. Sorry for the long story but I figure there is either a pinched wiring harness somewhere or a bad ground but no idea where. I am set to retire the van in a few months since it has rust in a few places, engine light on and chip in the window, and at 230k is probably not worth $500. My last 98 Windstar ran another 100k after it started having issues Any ideas? I would like to keep it running for another month or so. I can run power to the fan motor once it gets cold. I figure that I am missing somewhere all the wires for these components run together or ground?? Thanks, Steve 98 Gremlin green Windstar GL |
