96 4x4 trans which model and what upgrades

I'll try to keep this short but I want to give as much detail as possible so sorry if this post is long also see my previous post for some history. Thanks
First: The fluid in the trans looked almost new no burnt smell and clean, the filter even looked clean no particles.
Second: I want to be sure which trans I have, I take it the 4L60E and 4L80E looks similar and I'm thinking this truck may not have the original trans. I have looked on the trans and don't see any label to identify it. The bellhousing is part of the trans does not bolt on with the bottom being cut-a-way with a flywheel cover shield that bolts on. The trans pan has 16 bolts. Is threre anything that would be specific to one or the other trans so I could tell without a doubt.
Third: I have the trans out, removed the oil pan, filter, and removed pump thinking the lug that egages the torque converter is broken. Can someone tell me should that lug be solid or does it slide in and out to engage the slot in the torque converter? From looking on a trans web site and if I was looking at the right part it looks like the tab is welded onto the pump gear. If this is the problem should I rebuild the pump or replace?
Fourth: Since I have the trans out what should be the minimums I should do or things I should inspect. Keeping in mind on a very tight budget but want a reliable trans as well. Also where would be a good place to order parts either on line or local parts stores.

Re: 96 4x4 trans which model and what upgrades

Would like to add an update:
I took the pump apart and have confirmed my original diagnosis. The rotor that holds the vanes was broken into 4 parts and as well the tabs for the torque converter were broken off. still didn't see any metal shaving but the fluid did feel a bit grittie, also the screen cone didn't have any particals in it. Should I just rebuild this pump with a 13 vane kit cost on Performance Transmissions is $39. Again what would anyone recommend replacing while I have the trans opened up that is easy and cost effective. I am thinking this is a 4L60E but not 100 percent reason when I looked at the pump for a 4L80E it is a gear pump not a vane. Is this correct.
Will post updates as I go if not a problem.

If you left the converter on the engine when you removed the transmission, you may have broken the drive lugs then.

Re: 96 4x4 trans which model and what upgrades

I am pretty much 100% sure it wasn't due to the removal of the trans, because when I opened up the pump one of the vanes was wedged between the rotor and the slide indicating to me the rotor had turned/was turning after it broke.

Any recommendations what I should replace and/or inspect while I have the trans out and opened?

That pump housing is probably damaged, I would get another one, install a .500 boost valve in it before installing. As far as the trans goes, if you really want to do it right install:

Beast sun shell
29 element sprags
Corvette servo
Upgrade the 3-4 clutch stackup (This is a must)
Install shift kit (Trans go Jr. is good)
Address P-1870 problem (Shift kit will take care of this)
Use Borg Warner hi-energy clutches and band
Always install new pressure control solenoid
Molded rubber pistons in the input drum
ALWAYS replace torque converter

Now if you really want to get heavy duty, install:

5 pinion planets

Thanks for the info. I really don't want to tear into the clutches or gears, i was looking more for accessible parts such as the servoes, and other items as you mentioned the corvete servo, I also have seen something about the pinless actuators or anything else on the valve body that does not require it to be removed.

Re: 96 4x4 trans which model and what upgrades

On the by, the 4L60E was used for all non-diesel trucks and 7,400 GVWR. All 1/2 tons and most 3/4 tons (having the 6-lug wheels would usually mean your truck is a non-HD version) would have the -60E installed. Don't know for sure but the big block 7.4L might have the -80E as an option...someone else please chime in to confirm/deny.
