Starting issue

Hello,

I have been given an 89 XLT ranger. Its well loved with more than a few imperfections. The most annoying one is that sometimes when I try starting it, the starter whines with no firing at all. I wait a few moments and try again and it starts properly. The problem seems to be getting worse. My dad says thats a solenoid issue. Can someone confirm or add their own idea please?

Thanks in advance!

Jai

Re: Starting issue

When you say the starter whines with no firing at all, do you mean the starter sounds like it is turning and the engine is not? If YES that is a bad starter drive(bendix).

Pull the starter and use a set of starter cables watch what happens. You can use a 12 volt test light and check for power to the solenoid.

Thanks for the responses. I'll give those a try.

Re: Starting issue

I suspect your starter fails to engage the flywheel, probably a solenoid problem. If you decide to remove your starter, check the "teeth" in your flywheel also.
