No, that's not the RX-8 actually.
It's based off it. The FE model of the RX-7, the newest design for 2006, is a 2-door RX-8, same engine, RWD, and lighter. It'll go into production and such as long as the current RX-8 shows good progress in sales and gets good results. I sure hope to hell they make it though, since that'll be the car I'm slated to buy in 4 years, when school is done. ~A

i also have the same image in my issue of the australian car mag Wheels. so, i took the liberty of TYPING IT ALL FOR YOU.
__ mazda is reviving the legendary RX-7 sports car, all thanks to its investment in the RX-8 four-door sports coupe and Renesis two-rotor Wankel engine. The new two-seater is said to be derived from the RX-8's primary mechanical package, sharing suspension, transmission and even some underbody structure. Coded J77, the RX-7 will be lower and wider than the RX-8, on a considerably shorter wheelbase, rumoured to be between 2450-2550mm (96-100inches). But numbers are bigger under the bonnet, with a larger-displacement Renesis powerplant. Wider rotor chambers take the new powerplant to roughly 1.5 litres from the RX-8's 1.3 The larger engine is still under development, but reports in the Japanese press indicate output will be in the 224-240kw range (301-321hp), carrying full US emissions gear. A concept vehicle may be shown at the Tokyo motor show in October, incorporating most of the basic ideas behind the production model. Just as 1999's RX-Evolv concept car was philosophically akin to the production RX-8, the upcoming concept will reveal much about the next generation RX-7. The idea of an revival has been stewing at Mazda for a number of years, wit the basic concept of the car pencilled before production of the previous RX-7 ended in August last year. All the studies focused on sharing as many components and processes with the RX-8 as possible, although none used exterior panels from the four door. At least two of the studies included convertible variants, one of which was publicly alluded to as a possible RX-8 convertible. Mazda had two principle reasons for adopting a cautious approach for the new RX-7 project. One, to focus corporate resources on the RX-8, and the upcoming Mazda 3. Secondly, and most importantly, to see how well the RX-8 was received, especially the market's reaction to a rotary revival. Mazda got a good idea as to the potential pent-up demand for a new-era RX-7 from the extremely strong reaction Nissan’s 350z received in the US and Japan. This, in conjunction with the acclaim the RX-8 has garnered, facilitated the decision to proceed with a production RX-7. Apparently the J77 has even gained support among some of the more fiscally conservative members of Mazda's board of directors. Though nobody at Mazda has hinted about production schedules, reports in Japan's Magazine X state that the production RX-7 will debut sometime in 2006. |

I unfourtunatly see the RX7 turning into a $40k car however it will compete with the likes of the vette and not the mustangs and 350Z's
