Question Info on doing break stands

Ok, I was just reading about how to launch your car off the line the fastest and that with an automatic the best way is to do a break stand. Im just curious because I read alot of different things about doing a break stand. In all seriousness, how bad is it for the car? Can it really wreck your transmission? Or is it only bad if you do it for too long and cause heat build up? Im really new at this stuff so im sorry if this is a stupid question. The info on my car is: 2000 Cavalier - 4-cyl, automatic, front wheel drive. Im not exactly going for any big racing or anything but I like to have fun with friends now and then. Any info is greatly appreciated! :licker:

you mean by holding down the brake with your left foot and stomping the gas with your right then letting it sit for a second of too then letting off the brake and u go flying forward?

yea that fucks up your transmission soooooooooooooooooo bad. my friend did it like 3 times and i did it twice (5 times total) and a week later his transmission went out. 98 integra with 14,000 miles on it. burns out the clutches on each gear (yes automatics have clutches...)

I wouldn't recommend it for the setup you have. A brake stand is generally used to do a burn-out to heat the tires. In Cav, its probably pretty hard to burn out. If your intent is just to bring up the revs before starting, I still wouldn't do it. The front brakes of most cars are much stronger than the rears, so the are more prone to lock. In a rwd car, youy can push the brakes in part way and lock the front wheels, but allow the rears to spin, doing a brake stand. In a fwd car, you will lock the fronts and force the trans to slip instead...not very good.

on RWD i dont think its any worse than doing a burnout on FWD/RWD with a stickshift, but with an automatic and FWD i'd never think of doing a brake stand

power braking in a RWD car is effective because the brake bias is towards the front, so the HP can over power the rear brakes. You'd probaly break something if you power braked your FWD.
