97 K1500 350 Ignition Mishap/Question (please read)

Interesting story...

Rewind to about mid May of this year. I Replaced LIM gaskets, when I pulled the distributor out, I marked the rotor to housing, and housing to LIM. Got everything all going back together, time for distributor. It would not go in exactly where it came out, hanging up on the oil pump shaft. Wondering WTF I did because I did not turn the crank/cam at all. Either way, I got a long screwdriver, and turned the oil pump shaft. Distributor went in. Finished putting everything else back together. Started truck, fired right up, ran good. SES light on. P1345 (cam/crank sensors out of sync). WTF? I lined that dist up perfectly. Either way I shut the truck off, and turned the dist a touch one way, cleard the code, and it came back. Same the other way. The only way I could get the light to not show up was to turn the dist about an inch counter clockwise. So I did just to pull it out, clean up the mess and finish for the day exhausted.

So the next day, thinking the dist was off a tooth on the cam, I line the crank up #1 TDC. There is a timing mark on the timing chain cover and the crank pulley. I yanked the dist out, verified it was #1 TDC, and put it back in. This time I lined up my mark on the housing and LIM like I was doing the previous day. Started up with a p1345 again. I did this process over and over again. Turning that darn oil pump drive one direction and another to go onto different cam teeth. Everything I would try the truck wouldn't run or would trip a darn p1345 code. I spent a good 2 house messing with it. Pissed, so I stopped, cooled down, cut the grass, returned about 2 hours later, pulled the dist out again, lined it all up, pluced the dist in same way I had about 50 times already. Started the truck and no SES light. P1345 did not trip and all my marks were lined up. Finally.

Fast forward to yesterday. Truck has been fine since. Got in it yesterday morning, started it, and SES light was lit. WTF? I pulled out my code reader and p1345. Seriously? How could that have happened unless the dist wasn't torqued down right and spun a little on its own? Which I checked and it didn't. So I loosened the hold down bolt and turned the dist a little clockwise. Started it, light came back. Then I turned the Dist a little counter clock wise from my mark from when I did LIM's, and the SES light did not return at that position.

I just left it there. I am at a loss. How could this be happening? I just don't understand. Only thing I could think of is maybe the cam timing is shifting, but the truck runs just fine. Or else, how is the crank sensor set up on this motor?

Thanks, I should bring it in to have cam retard checked, but you would think with my marks, that it should be fine.

What would cause it to go from no light to p1345 the next day? Worn engine timing components?
