stiff steering in both directions

Hi, I'm working on a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix with a 3800 series III V6. It steers like the old standard steering cars. The reservoir is full and I don't hear any unusual noises. It looks like there may be some oil seepage at the bottom of the steer box (if that's what it's called). Does the pump have to be replaced or is there something else that can cause the problem? Thank you for any help that is given.

Re: stiff steering in both directions

If the ps fluid is full, i would have to say maybe a bad rack and pinion.

Re: stiff steering in both directions

Thanks for the reply. Is there anyway to test it? How hard are they to change?

Re: stiff steering in both directions

How many miles are on your car.

Another question, If you bring your car above idle, will it steer easier?

Re: stiff steering in both directions

Hi. I just tried the steering above idle and it steers easier than at idle.

Re: stiff steering in both directions

Sounds like the pump may be on its way out or you have a kinked or restricted ps hose.

And the fluid level is OK, is it being aerated, has bubbles in it?

Re: stiff steering in both directions

Doesn't have bubbles in it. I will check for a blocked line. Thank you.
