clacketey sound when I turn off my PA Ultra, coming from snout of supercharger
So my G/F totaled my 98 PA ultra on Tuesday.
I found another one (another 98 pa ultra) and got a pretty good deal on it ($2250 out the door, 135k miles, no issue other than the clackety) because it does a clackety number from the SC snout when you turn it off. It is not long or super loud, just a 1/2 second cackedy clack when you turn the motor off. It does not make a single strange noise otherwise, and functions flawlessly. I am suspecting bearings or coupler, but I am hoping to hear from the wisdom of someone that has more experience working with superchargers than myself. I think worst case scenario I can take the SC off my totaled PA and put it on the new one, but if I can get by replacing the bearing, seal, and coupler then I will go that route. |

Remove the SC drive belt & see if you have free movement back & forth. If so, this would indicate the coupler is worn. It is easy to replace the coupler, but much more involved to replace the bearings & front seal. In addition, you will need a "pulley puller" as described by Clicking Here. I would suggest having a spare SC drive pulley available, since the OEM usually warps when removing.
