Jetta 1.8t vs Explorer V8 AWD

an impromtu street race settled a debate, he thought his explorer was faster than my moms Jetta 1.8t five speed, he was wrong. I gave him the jump and had him by several car lengths, good thing i turned off the traction control 'cause that would've killed me.

Ya' and explorer Vs. a Jetta. Yeesh. That moron should have known that he would loose. I have driven one and they have one of the slowest V8s in any vehicle I have driven.

There was an aftermarket tuner who put a 5.0 in an explorer - the newer style one. I bet that thing went like Snot !

i raced him again!!!

I just raced the same explorer against my '91 CRX SI and beat him again, I'm pretty sure my moms Jetta is faster than my CRX (not as cool, but faster) so yeah, explorer is pretty slow. The explorer is a 95-96 so it is a 5.0, 215-225 horsepower. peace

Hes a fool if he thought it was faster. Could it be he just wanted to race for fun win or lose?

actually...

We were actually prodded into racing by his friend, it was all for fun, not for pinks or money. To tell the truth I would have bet money that the Explorer would win, it suprised me when I started pulling on him like I did. A few years ago when I was in highschool and was driving a '91 Prelude SI I raced my best friend who was driving... the exact same Explorer V8! I almost lost and I could swear that the 'lude was faster than the rex. I still think the 'lude is faster, it's dead now but I think I almost lost to the explorer in the 'lude because I was... a shitty driver. Yes, I admit, when I was young and stupid I did some stupid shit and should've died several times over. Now i'm not as young and raced the same Explorer (different driver, best friends little brother) and beat it, I think i'm just (gasp) getting to be a good driver!

Exclamation

i have had a similar experience. One night I was going down Blanding Blvd. for the locals in Jax. This 89' big ass Blazer pulls up and revs...flow masters blowing loud! It had rained earlier in the day, so the road was a little damp. So I rev...Light goes green...i gun it, and start getting sideways because of the wet road. Once I get my grip I fire past them! The guy driving must have thought he could beat the Z, because when we stopped at the next light his two friends in there with him were pointing and laughing at him. i guess he talked some shit like he could take me. I worked him like a kid in Kathy Lee Giffords factory!

Since I own a Jetta, I am curious why would you bother to pay the cost of a Jetta and not purchase one with an automatic transmission? The difference in fuel cost is not that high.

Thoughts?

Manual transmissions are okay.

I guess I just go back to the common sense statement:

* purchase for your intended use

In other words, if you gonna mod out a car, buy a car that has the largest available mods available. If you are buying a car for traveling to work, school, and out, then buy for that reason.

the 91 lude si you were talking about is hella quicker than the crx...

on that explorer, it is the 5.0 v8 that was in the mustang.. 220hp...
however, the weight, and 4wd is alot heavier... if he was working it, which i doubt he was, he could probably coax that thing into some 4wheel tirespin and get some power down... but i doubt that is what he did... either way, its an suv that is way underpowered... until you look at 1/4 times... they arent slow...
i would honestly have put the money on the explorer... odd...
