Unhappy speed questions

so I have a 1984 BMW 745i (Euro model)... most everything has been rebuild including the engine... she is in great working condition... etc...

some "friends" were insulting my car... and before I respond I want to make sure I am right... it would be bad to brag about my car and exaggerate by a few miles... it would ruin it, you know...

so the question is... my speedometer goes up to 169 m.p.h.
can my car, theoretically go that fast, can it go faster?
also, can it sustain high speeds like say, 110 m.p.h. for like 50 or 60 miles...

I told them that is what my speedometer said, and they started mocking me saying maybe it is in kilometers per hour... now I KNOW that isn't true... but I don't have my car at school (college) with me to show them... please help... the pride of me and my BMW are at stake...

I knew "you" would understand... hehe... thanks!

Talking speed happy

You should have no problems sustaining 110mph for extended periods - however I would suspect that you will peak out at 140 sorry.

Speed

I am the proud owner of an '84 733i, and am happy to say that I've reached 120 on more than one occassion with relative ease. You are driving the same car with a better weight/bHP ration. I would agree that you will probably top out at 140, but it could take awhile for you to reach that speed.

Professional driver. Closed course. Do not try this at home.

Please don't try to prove to your college friends that the car will go really, really fast because it will, and your driving skills may not be up to the task, or a(nother) crazy driver might dart into your path or some other unexpected occurance. My daughter is barely out of college herself and I can't tell you how much it would hurt to lose her. I'm sure your parents feel the same way.

The car was designed to cruise the autobahn at high speed, but it should only be done with nearly new tires, nearly new struts and other suspension parts, perfect steering, and damn good brakes.

Don't get me wrong. I was young and foolish too and I drove a car in excess of 100 mph and I survived, as most people do. But really, what's the point?

Liberty gave you some real good sound advice. Power and speed is nice to have, but with it comes responsabilty.
Besides that a young person going to court to pay a 140 mph speeding ticket would break the bank, and your insurance company would flip out.
Just enjoy your car and be safe.

your 80's 745i is a turbo 733i, and the 733 can do 120 easy, i'b be willing to bet you can do at least 140 maybe more depending on whether it is limited or not. i also agree with liberty that proving that is just stupid, 140 is really fast and you can't predict what others will do. i also doubt you are a professional and can handle 140 mph

If you live near Connecticut, and are willing to spend the money, why don't you take driving lessons at Limerock Race Track.

But The old 745i, in new condition did top out actually at 227 km/h or exactly 141.0512606378748 MPH.

Many manufacturers really, extend or exaggerate the car's actual top speeds on the speedometers. They like to add that type of "touch" to the car, so the car doesnt look wimpy to the buyer. Who would want to buy a car, that only has a top speed of 120? I know some of the SUVs only go as high as 110 or 120 but thats different. Like, my moms Acura, it says on the speedometer that it can go as high as 175, but, it's a V6 for cryin out loud.

If your friends are such morons as to seriously insult a classic BMW (a rare grey-market 745i no less), then I don't think you need invest the effort to prove anything to them. I'm sure your car can probably go 130-140 if you wait long enough--but when I'm going that fast on stringently enforced roads, waiting is the last thing on my mind. Plus, although I've exceeded 100 mph countless times in my Acura Legend, I must agree it's sort of irresponsible to attempt that in anything other than a flawlessly maintained car, with a minimum of traffic--or not attempt it at all.
