1990 Scottsdale Wont Start
Trying to get a 1990 Chevy Scottdale to run. Its a friend of mine. He said he put a new computer in it. What he didn't tell me is that he did not swap out the prom from the old computer to the new computer. Any who, bought a new prom for it and installed and still have the same problem. The check engine light is flashing rapidly with code 51, bad prom. No fuel is coming out of the injectors. He just replaced the fuel pump. Could hear the pump kick on last night, but now it will not. I put in a new ignition module, and neutral saftey switch on the column. I am going insane trying to figure this one out. If I spray fuel down the throttle body, the truck will run until the fuel is used and then dies. What am I not thinking of? Any help would be appreciated!

Re: 1990 Scottsdale Wont Start
Bought a new computer and still have the same problem. Have code 51, bad prom. The computer looks like should have two proms. There is a place for a small chip and a place for a larger chip. I called the dealer and talked to a service manager, and he said it takes two chips. The parts people all say it only needs one. I would guess it needs two, because I have a new computer, a new small prom, and have all the same problems.
The service manager said I need a CALPACK. Tried to find one, online but no luck. Any ideas? The whole problem started when my friend took the original computer to he parts place to exchange it for a new one. He did not know he needed to swap out the old proms first. Monte |

This is a picture of the ECM where the proms go. There is a place on the left for a small prom, and a place for a bigger prom on the right. Trying to find out if I need the bigger prom on the right, and if so, where I can find one.

You will need the small one and big one. Dealers can order big one from vin no. But small, one may be a problem. You might check a salvage yard for a use computer with the same set up engine/transmission/and stuff as your truck. Take small one out of itand install in your new ECm or. Just Hook used ECM it up and see it it will work. Code 51 says check prom for plugged in good. May set if small or big one bad or not there. If plugged in good and both there it is bad prom/mem-cal. Replace and. Clear code and if comes back replace ECM. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

What brand ECM did you install? I know cardone remanufactured 'new' ones are prone for issues right out of the box.

Re: 1990 Scottsdale Wont Start
Problem Solved! The problem was that I needed both proms. The smaller prom is called the CALPAK. The larger prom is called the Calibration Prom. Called one dealer and they said they could not get it any longer because the truck was too old. So, called another dealer and they said no problem, and ordered it for me. Had it the next day for the low low price of $115.00. Part number #16147512. Now that I have both proms, the truck started right up. Another mystery solved! www.acdelco.com has a good web site for parts look up. Thought I'd post the results in case anyone else is having the same problem. This forum is priceless!
