Trans issues after fluid/filter change

I tried searching but the only thread I could find was about a hesitation that was cured by disconnecting the battery for 24 hours? I also saw an old post by BNaylor about resetting something with a Tech II (PCM reset?), which we have at work but i'm not sure how to do that procedure.

car is a 02 gt with DHP 1.0 and OK shift kit (spacers on accumulator shafts). I had no issues prior to Saturday, had run ~110K miles like this, just over 200K now.

Here are my symptoms:
after a pan drop and filter change 4 days ago, i noticed a slight hesitation when coming to a stop sign then accelerating again, like it paused before dropping into first and taking off again. other than that it has been OK until this afternoon, now i am getting some weird hesitation when i take off from a stop, like it will accelerate a little then rpms go up a little and the car slows down, then it "catches" a little, and if i let off it shifts to second and works more normally. once I stop again it does it again, and if I give it more gas it exaggerates the problem, until the shift to second and its better again.

I had a small leak on the trans pan, and am wondering if it ran a little low on fluid would that affect the PCM's learned values if i then filled it up properly? would resetting it maybe get rid of this?

thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Trans issues after fluid/filter change

Bob was probably refiring to resetting the TAPS (forget the acrony exactly Trans Adapt something or other) which unless the trans is a fresh rebuilt, or just had a shift kit installed, probably not going to help. Since you ran the past 90k or so on the shift kit wihtout a TAPS reset, one now probably wont help.

I am wondering if you are getting momentarly loss of fluid pressure. When you replaced the filter, did you happen to check the filter snout seal? Did the fliter fit snugly into the seal? If the seal is leaky, it could be losing its prime and that could cause all sorts of odd issues. If I were you, I'd be half tempted to go back in there.

What brand filter and fluid did you go with? dexron mercon I hope.

Re: Trans issues after fluid/filter change

yeah, dex merc with a duralast brand filter...it was a snug fit into the new snout seal, but i noticed there was some interference of the flange of the filter with a bolt on the accumulator body, pushing the other side of the filter toward the rear edge of the pan, i had to push the filter with the pan to get the pan bolts back in...i wonder if that compromised the snout seal? If you have a leak around that seal it can cause issues?

Re: Trans issues after fluid/filter change

it is possible, and yes a leak around that seal could cause issues. You may want to get that duralast filter out of there and put in a delco or wix (although I am not sure if Wix makes trans filters).

It was the "universal" type ATF, coastal brand I think...same as what I'd been running for 110k miles, but with a delco filter...only reason I bought the AZ filter was because I couldn't get to the dealer...

I guess I'll drop the pan, replace the filter with a delco one and reuse the fluid...I'll report back afterwards...

Thanks for the input guys...

Coastal? Use some decent brand ATF. Dexron III or Dexron VI type only. Even the Walmart brand Supertech is probably better and reasonable cost.
