Consensual Crimes

What does everyone think of all of the laws pertaining to consensual, or "victimless" crimes (things like Marijuana, or destroying your personal items for no financial gain, etc.) To me it is a waste of money, and constitutes a blatant disregard of everything that America was supposed to be. A land of freedom and happiness, where man was to be allowed to govern his own actions, to the extent that he did not cause harm to others. Example... I torch my car because it is a POS. (some of them I have wanted to) There is no one around except myself, and I'm not trying to get any insurance money out of it, I just want to see the F***er burn. I can get arrested, tried, convicted, and sent to jail for this. Why? It's my car!! I own it, and I'm not harming anyone else. Any thoughts on these, and the myriad other consensual/victimless crimes?

That is a crime of stupidity and somebody needs to do something about it.

On what charge would you be arrested, tried and convicted? Arson codes usually stipulate 'malicious intent,' while yours seems recreational. (You could probably be committed to a mental health institution at that point, though.)

On the other hand, unless you then hire a truck to haul it away, it's littering. Is littering a victimless crime?

isn't it stopping you from commiting acts of stupidity that'll make you regret doing that.

Say you want to burn you car cuz its a POS would it not be more beneficial and satisfying to sell the bast*rd to someone else and watch them suffer and have money from it? I think there's a reascon for these laws you should find out why they were put in place in the first place it might answer your question :o

In regards to Marijuana I think that alchohol is more destructive and more dangerous than Pot. Destroying personal items this should definately be a decision left to the owner of the item, however I would probably not back torching a car do to the enviornmental consequences of antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid, oil, and gas.

how about potential damage to others? there's always a victim, even if it's only the one doing the act.

sure, with the car thing, someone might see it as a harmless victimless act, but what stops you at burning your own car? especially if your reason was "because i wanted to see it burn".

I agree. And the government could really stand to make a lot of money on this. I know a lot of people who would easily pay a $15 tax on it. It is a lot safer than beer, the anti-drug commercials falsify all of their information and go on stereotype and not facts. Everyone I know is a lot more in control of themselves when they are "high" than when they are drunk. I still think they need to stop until it does become legal but im not them so i can't make them.

mmmmmm.. doritos...

you should be able to destroy your own property, whether it's burning your car/weed/whatever. the government shouldn't have to protect you from yourself. the fatcats just want to make a quick buck though. everyone is greedy.

There are way more "crimes" than just those. In Arkansas, sex toys are illegal. In like, 13 states, any sexual act other than straight missionary style are illegal. Burning any type of standing building is illegal (but you can pull it down and then burn it legally... figure that one out). Tinting windows beyond -whatever number for your state- % is illegal (30 here). Do any of these things endanger anyone but yourself? (Ok, no S&M Jokes). It is illegal to be drunk in public... and so many more.
