This has more to do with the North American market than with Daimler-Benz's "affection with slushboxes". Over here most MB automobiles are sold with 6-speed manual transmissions and not automatics, but as one may expect, the more upscale the car (E and S-Class for example), the higher the chance of it having an automatic.
However, their 6-speed manual trannies have a "notchy" feel to them, the BMW manual transmissions being smoother shifting.

Nonetheless I think you've summed up the BMW vs. MB image comparison quite nicely.

Thanks...I just thought this bickering was rather stupid...I mean they're both great cars that serve different purposes. No reason to fight over them.
